Leaders are deciders. Leaders have to be deciders. When deciding Leaders use their values.
To become or be a Leader and Decider you have to be excellent in evaluating our desirability strength! Our desire to achieve a certain goal has the most impact on reaching this goal. The desire is the magnet. It pulls us and builds our strength which is relevant for being persistent and “able” to reach the goal. To permanently go for long-term goals leaders have to be able to evaluate their desirability strength. As a leader you need to know if you are going to make it – or not.
(3) Evaluate your desirability strength
Evaluating is an analysis of our past achievements. My advice today is: take a piece of paper, sit and write it down. List for yourself:
- how many goals did I reach by strong decision making?
- how long did each goal take me (weeks-months-years)?
- how much did I do actively within the time spans ?
- was there a “coincidence” goal which I reached real fast?
Your answers will you give an idea about your personal strength level (0 – 10) in total. As an example: if you reached many short term goals with not much effort it´s likely that your strength level is not at 10. It´ll max around 5. [Pls. note: give a coincidence goal the level of 10.] But of course there´s something positive about it – you gained strength for fast decision making. You know all the short-term goals which are fast to reach. But you don´t know how persistent you will be when it comes to long-term goals. Set your first long-term goal today!
Opposite: if you reached many long-term goals with much effort and action, it´s most likely that your strength level varies around 10. Long-term goals include short-term steps so you´re good at both.
The desirability is something different. This is more influenced by the pain you took or the wish you run after since your childhood. Lets look at both facts:
PAIN level: most people suffer mental (and later heart-)pain from not knowing what life really offers to them. They try a lot to find the path and with every fail of direction or goal reaching they suffer pain due to loss. If you don´t reach something in life, if you don´t find something in life you suffer “loss”. The gap you want to fill won´t fill. Lets equal loss with emptyness to have an abstract. Pain will drive you!
WISH strength: if we have a strong childhood dream all we will do over the years is keep it up until we figured out how to reach it, best case most effectively. We won´t know as a child how to fulfill this dream so we learn everything we need to get there and reach that goal.
As an example: by the age of 6 years I knew I wanted to work in London and Paris and have something to do with fashion. I learned the English language even before we started at school. I learned French for 4 years at school but that was really more difficult than I thought. (Back then I had no idea that my health status was to become completely out of balance by age of 9 years and that a mountain-huge hurdle was set up in front of this wish by an invisible hand or company). My childhood dream changed due to this hurdle and its challenges twices because I had to add new lessons learned. By now the dream expanded from London & Paris to work worldwide.
Now lets get back to the topic to be or become a leader who needs to evaluate its own desirability strength for the relevant decisions when starting and leading a business. CHECK: how long is your list? How many long- and short-term goals did you reach by effective decision making?
