I am currently reading….. “Give & Take” by A. Grant.
He explored the styles of givers and takers and matchers, wondering who´s on top in the success-matrix! Now, guess who –
But before you get to read the result, let me explain the difference between givers and takers:
- GIVERS are other-focused, paying more attention to what other people need from them. They prefer to give more than they get.
- TAKERS are putting their own interests ahead of others´ needs. They like to get more than they give. They also self-promote and make sure they get plenty of credit for their efforts.
As a result, Givers and Takers differ in their attitudes. A taker helps others strategically when the benefits to them outweigh the personal costs. (80 : 20 rule maybe ?) A giver helps whenever the benefits to others exceed the personal costs. (20 : 80 rule maybe ?)
At work, givers tend to give time, energy, knowledge, skills, ideas and connections to other people. But the trap is that they might rest on this baseline when neglecting to follow their own schedule, technical tasks and deadlines due to over-caring for others. But it´s just a trap, no rule.
At work, matchers (who go equal) tend to outweigh their give & take exchange. They follow the rule of fairness. While we all TAKE during price- or salary negotiations, we all GIVE in relationships. No doubt!
But while givers are so generous to others – do only takers WIN? –>> NO!
GIVERS dominate the bottom AND the top of the success ladder! As a matter of fact, takers place themselves successfully in the “middle class” at work, and it´s the different strategies givers use and the choices they make to also rule the top….
BE A DECISION MAKER. BE OUTSTANDING.
