Any time we have to react to our wishes or goals with a smart decision, alternatively to external pressure for new directions, we have to define the decision problem and choose the right criteria. That´s the main part of a great decision process but, wait – there is more!
Never wait until a decision is forced on you or even made for you so better arm with the 8 elements of a smart choice to become proactive:
- Problem or ambitious goal
- Risk Tolerance
- Linked Decisions
This framework includes 8 combined key elements which shall direct your decision making to increase your chances of finding a satisfying solution. Mostly our decisions are directed by numbers/figures, called cost. But the figures allow a flying range for us, and it´s not always small.
Focus your thinking where it matters most! Usually, only 1 or 2 elements will emerge as the most critical for the best decision of yours. Alternatives are often cost relevant and only beat by time. Consequences also drive you mostly: Best case vs. worst case! What´s the likelihood that it happens at all? Don´t let yourself scare away by made-up consequences, stay with reality and its likelihood.
You cannot do anything about real uncertainties unless you can get extra information to minimize or eliminate them. Know, your personal risk tolerance depends upon your experience versus your cautiousness. But it helps a lot if you sit down to take notes for your 8 elements before taking the next complex decision without any preparation (!).
Feed your gut feelings positively with a realistic thought process – even if you don´t meet the goal perfectly after this abstract planning, in the end you know you did your best to reach it.
BE A DECISION MAKER. BE OUTSTANDING.
