You sit in your office and you frown AGAIN? ….not sure which alternative to choose? And you know this challenge won´t end unless you find a new process or a mechanism for a break through?
If you have to weight several “good” alternatives which don´t differ so much and by now you only listed the main criteria – do a little more work today. List the uncertainties and the consequences for each choice. To make it easy, use a piece of paper for each choice. Decide for the 4 best choices as a maximum. Write each choice as a title on top of the blank paper. Below the title, you write a big “YES” for this choice. Then below the “yes” list all the consequences, all to-do´s which are necessary to accomplish on this path to reach the goal.
Below the consequences, which is the information you already know today, you list the uncertainties – it´s the information you do not know by today. It could be an quantity or an amount, a certain time you need, or a new customer you haven´t met and worked with. It could be a new city you suddenly need to involve with your next project or a new culture.
Then take the next alternative you´re flirting with. Write another title on top, another “YES” below, list more consequences beneath and other uncertainties which go with this choice. And then do the next. And the next. It´s 4 choices by now which became now quite visible to you. Now put the papers all together, no ranking necessary, and maybe hang them up on the wall for a day or two. Walk by, look at the alternatives, the to do´s and the uncertainties. Which uncertainty can you solve in the meantime? Be detailed how to solve each uncertainty. Make notes!
Which alternative of your 4 choices speaks the most to you?
Unfortunately there´s is no clear picture which goes with the word “decision” because it is an abstract thing we can´t touch, paint, frame or dress. It is something we can not see in the beginning. But we need to DO it, to perform it.
When you take decisions, what you need to see upfront are the all included steps you need to accomplish which take either time and consume money. A big decision could be drafted like a huge ship: instead of several containers you fill it with the tasks you need to accomplish (know what to do, how to do, and add those who are involved). This ship then slowly gets you to your goal which might take months or a few years. Another decision which can be accomplished faster could be drafted like a truck or a SUV, if this picture helps you understand the single consequences and uncertainties. Does it help?
The ship can get lost by course or in a storm and all containers will “drown”. But no, you don´t plan this storm in the beginning. You want an unsinkable ship with a course – your goal. Think of the SUV, which could lose track and end up in the woods in case you forget to give a clear plan. A plan is part of the problem definition. And no, you can´t order the crystal ball from me which offers a look into the future….
But you can start taking first decisions and first action steps into the future to make sure to arrive where you planned to go within the relevant time frame! Keep in mind to ask yourself now – do you belong there? Can you survive and grow on that new spot? Is it fun and fulfilling? Will you get the profit you expect to get today? Are you truly THAT risky? Will you handle all consequences?
Your potential decision should be a lot clearer now – oh, and please leave a comement below, thanks.
BE A DECISION MAKER. BE OUTSTANDING.
