The question of “moving a team into a new or external building” was listed as N°3 in my Blog-post from June 25th, 2014, with the title: “Re-Structuring?”
Did you ever challenge one of your teams, asking them what they think about working somewhere else than close to the headquarter? And….., how was the first reaction? Did they sleep it over before you asked?
I recall an episode when I was working in the Automotive Sector. I was starting a new position with a team I fully matching. The team itself was working externally close to the customer, about 60 miles away from the headquarter. After a while they received the order to give up their external office and move their desks into the Sales building. It was an integration move.
……. guess what?
Exactly – all of them quit their jobs within a year. One remained. And suddenly I was surrounded by new and younger colleagues who were far different from the old team I was hired for. The team spirit was gone. Chaos!
You might not only consider involved costs when moving a team somewhere else, for whatever reason it might be a good choice to do so. It´s giving them more freedom. It´s handing them more trust (!) and responsibility, and it´s a test for all. The benefit(s) for your business you hope for needs to be way bigger long-termly if you decide for this step, because it´s also a risk.
And BTW: it is also a trick to get rid of people your biz doesn´t require anymore….. This strategy may have 2 different causes! Your team might turn suspicious – have an eye on every uncertainty.
BE A DECISION MAKER. BE OUTSTANDING.
