2 Tips When Setting GOALS

April 26, 2015 | Filed under: rita

A goal shall solve a problem or challenge!  One needs the other to exist.  But the goal needs to be specified quite well for gathering the relevant info, which will be sorted via each criteria.  The clearer the goal, the clearer its criteria and the better information you will get.  The info itself is relevant for a good prognosis!

That means for decision making we need to set a goal, but who of you knows that there are 2 different BASIC kinds of a goals?  Okay, here´s the answer:

We can set a POSITIVE (+) goal or a NEGATIVE (-) goal!  Now you may ask yourself, what´s the difference?  And how can a goal be “negative” when we try to solve something for the better?

A positive (+) goal = when a certain condition or status, which seems to be desirable, shall be reached

A negative (-) goal = when certain conditions, which don´t suit you or your plans, shall be changed, avoided or disposed for once and for all.

There is a clear difference between both:

A positive (+) goal gets easier clarified and is better described specifically, than a negative goal.  It is decribed with many criteria.  Mostly, when we reach out for a positive (+) goal, the one criteria we go for will cause the effect of reaching another criteria, once we go for action.  Things will develop!

A negative (-) goal appears when a certain deficiency status shall be avoided from now on or simply be changed.  It´s more globally defined and not well determined.  It describes the indecisiveness of a negative condition.  It mostly lacks a goal-definition. Mostly a typical disadvantage is that when we eliminate a drawback, often 2 new ones appear in other linked sectors or areas.  That´s the negativity about it!  If you take away something of an issue or person which or who is already handicapped then new disadvantages will appear.  (Part of development work, which can cause negative outcomes thou´ the plan was to help)

To solve this negative (-) “goal definition” before we even think of solving the problem, we need to de-compose the single parts of it and carve out what´s meant in detail!  For example, a negative (-) goal is globally defined as COZINESS, or USER-friendliness or JOBHOLDER-friendliness.  It´s ample!  To solve it, you and I need to specify it and then set certain criteria to meet the solution on the other side.  A mayor often has to deal with ample problems.

Setting the relevant criteria for a positive change is most important for a specific goal to get on with the action plan!

GOAL-setting therefore shall be aligned to a maximum of efficiency-divergency:  it includes many opportunities for operations with a high success-probability.  Specified goals are the basics for our planning and for our behaviour.  Here are some examples:

  • When you look for fresh strawberries you either drive to the grocery, or go to a market or you drive to a field outside the city and pick them yourself from the plants.
  • When you look for new staff, you gather as many applications as possible (look out on various platforms) to make sure you find what you´re looking for.
  • When you plan to reach a certain goal in a certain time with your team and you know they lack some information today, you offer each of them the right training tomorrow, knowing it´ll support them to work better and faster!  Right?
  • If you plan to go on vacation just for scuba-diving, you check out all places around the world, before you start choosing some favourites!

…..on which goal-type are you working lately?

BE A DECISION MAKER.  BECOME OUTSTANDING.
