1 Way To Simplify A Complex Decision

March 22, 2015 | Filed under: rita

A more complex problem brings a couple of alternatives, and choosing from more than 2 options makes it harder for us!

Take the problem of looking for a new office to work from!  The thing is to choose the ideal location.  But first let´s find out what ideal means:

Ideal means you are going to work in a location where it´s easy for you to drive and park your car, where your clients have easy access, where office service is placed closed-by, plus the office and its monthly cost both match your budget.

Here´s how you approach to your solution – use a consequence table and add different measurement scales:

CT for choices

Now you get an idea what choosing from various options means!  It´s important to write it down in detail, just to avoid surprises after signing the contract.

You might consider starting with the dominance of the 2 most relevant items.  It could be the access of your clients and the monthly cost you will have to deal with.  (Hint:  in terms of the monthly costs you have to add the parking costs as well.)  This should give your choice a clear kick at once!

You can use a ranking for your first overview!  ….. which location is still in the game now?

Maybe you have a certain room-style or -design already in mind because you know where you love to work all day – this will influence your choice as well.

>> If this scenario applies to your actual planning I am happy to be supportive today.

BE A DECISION MAKER.  BE OUTSTANDING.

    Hi Rita,

That is a good way to break down hard decisions. When it comes to such a big decision it is hard to keep track of what are the advantages and disadvantages of each option. I see how I make decisions intuitively in such a case which sometimes ends up to be a bad decision because I didn’t consider everything. Breaking it down in such a spreadsheet definitely makes it easier.

Thank you Gabriel, for your comment and explanation about HOW this improves YOUR decision making! Intuition quickly tells us how to FEEL good but it doesn´t consider monthly payments yet, because they´re done in the future and we are not able “to feel” such future investments (payments) today.
